Alice Walker said, "hard times require furious dancing"
reminding myself to still embrace joy
I've been avoiding writing and engaging in anything that forces me to sit with my thoughts because everything feels awful. But then, I came across this video:
I needed the reminder to dance, find joy, and laugh. Social media lately has been overwhelming. I think that for all of us, having access to news, drama, or any form of negative content 24/7 affects how we sustain ourselves each day. To better cope and thrive, it's essential to fill our downtime with healing activities that recharge us.We should dance the night away, laugh over dinner with friends, go on dates, and enjoy the cute barista's offer of free coffee.
Some changes I'm making include prioritizing joy and embracing the discomfort that comes with trying new things. For instance, I spoke with two new friends about joining their dance studio to try beginner ballet. I also aspire to attend an aerial fitness class (…. tbd). I'm signing up for presale tickets for my favorite artists, discussing my best friend's upcoming wedding, and planning to visit my sister. I have much to appreciate and will continue reminding myself why I choose to live.
I am exploring new crafts and enjoying my work at a bookstore, where I plan a book club focusing on social justice issues, humor, and community. I am trying to untangle all these emotions and remind myself that there are things that I can do for myself to recharge— writing poetry, reading, and consuming art in all forms—
I have been listening to podcasts that make me laugh:
I have TV shows that are distracting and silly to watch:
I also have been watching Youtube videos that inspire me and fill me with creative joy:
Discovering joy each day doesn't need to be overwhelming; often, something as simple as making your bed can have a significant impact. Personally, I’ve found fulfillment in connecting with others and cultivating a sense of community by identifying organizations and clubs where I can contribute or donate. Consider the steps you can take to uncover light, hope, and joy, while working towards creating a supportive community filled with love and friendship.
Yes to all of these and to consciously living in the present👏 Social media is becoming an increasingly overwhelming place, and I often catch myself questioning how healthy it is to be exposed to so much information at once. We've been conditioned to depend upon it but I think a lot of us are now recognising how disrupting it is to our sense of wellbeing and mental clarity, how on some level our preoccupation with it feels instinctively wrong...
